Al Thakira, also known as Al Dhakira, is among Qatar’s oldest and largest mangrove forests. These native trees thrive in briny water and can withstand extreme temperatures. It’s a unique ecosystem that attracts birds, fish and crustaceans throughout the year, and can be easily reached by car from Doha – although in an offroad vehicle.

Avicennia Marina is a grey or white mangrove tree adapted to growing in salt water.
Al Thakira translates to ‘ammunition’ in English. The mangrove is located 17 km northeast of the city of Al Khor.
Al Thakhira was proclaimed a natural reserve in 2006 for its rich marine biodiversity.
One of Qatar’s most visited attractions, Al Thakira is nestled along the northeast coast of Qatar and beckons as a premier relaxation spot just 40 minutes from Doha. Discover all the things you can do in this coastal area.
Many companies offer guided tours, where you can navigate the waterways on a kayak or stand-up paddle (SUP). You’ll spot a variety of birds like herons and flamingos and see marine life like crabs and fish. You will also learn about the environmental benefits of mangroves, such as removing carbon dioxide from the air, providing breeding areas for fish and protecting shorelines from erosion.
The serene Al Thakira Beach is popular with families and holidaymakers who enjoy swimming, sunbathing or picnics with beautiful views of the mangrove forest. This is also a popular fishing spot among locals and you can bring a grill to barbecue with friends right at the beach.
For photographers wanting a stark contrast to Doha’s futuristic cityscapes, Al Thakira offers evergreen spaces in summer and winter. You will find incredible scenery to capture at sunrise or sunset as you walk along the wooden walkways. Carry your binoculars, wear comfortable shoes and apply sunblock.
The dense mangroves offer a protected environment for wildlife, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers. The forest is teeming with life, attracting fish and crabs, birds and other migratory birds including gulls, cormorants and waders, geese, mallards and teal. Ornithologists have discovered that Al Thakira is a favourite resting spot for flamingos, where they can wade in shallow, salty waters and easily feed on fish and crustaceans. Remember never to walk in the forest as it could damage the mangroves.
Look out for tour companies offering camping trips at Al Thakira. You will see the sunset and spend the night by the campfire – star gazing guaranteed! With the first rays of the sun, you can go kayaking and experience the early morning activity of birds on the tranquil waters.
