Established in one of Qatar’s oldest neighbourhoods, Al Janoub Stadium constructions began in January 2016, making it the first of the stadiums built from scratch to be ready for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. The stadium costed $576 million and was inaugurated during the Amir Cup final in May 2019. Al Janoub Stadium was awarded a Class A* sustainability rating by the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS). AL JANOUB STADIUM DESIGN

Al Janoub Stadium was the first stadium in Zaha Hadid’s portfolio. Its roof is designed in homage to Al Wakrah’s fishing and pearl diving history, and the wind-filled sails of the traditional dhow boats. The building itself resembles upturned hulls, arranged in a huddle to provide shade and shelter. Like Al Bayt Stadium, Al Janoub Stadium has a retractable roof to support the interior cooling system.
